Preserve America Award
We are proud to announce that the City of Rio Grande City has been awarded the designation of a Preserve America Community from the Federal government. This is a great honor for our city and has practical applications in relation to our ability to promote cultural tourism in Rio Grande City, as well as the awareness and education of preservation issues in our city. The Preserve America designation provides an opportunity to acquire matching grants from $20,000 to $150,000 which can benefit all of our citizens by way of awards for research, documentation, interpretation markers, planning, marketing, and training. In 2006, Preserve America Grants totaling nearly $5 million were awarded to 68 projects around the country. Nearly $5 million will be awarded in 2007. President Bush’s fiscal year 2008 budget requests $10 million in grant funds for which only designated Preserve America Communities may apply.
For our Preserve America Community designation we will have received the following: official White House recognition and a certificate of that recognition; a Preserve America Community road sign; authorization to use the Preserve America logo on signs, flags, banners, and promotional materials; listing in a Web-based Preserve America Community directory; inclusion in national and regional press releases; official notification of designation to State tourism offices and visitor bureaus; and enhanced community visibility and pride.
The Preserve America Application was submitted by the Rio Grande City Main Street Program as part of its continuing efforts to promote and seek justifiable recognitions for the city of Rio Grande City.
